Paradise Lost: Trump Holds Rallies in Liberal Cities, Criticizes Them"
See videoOver the weekend, former President Donald Trump made uncommon campaign stops in Colorado and California—two states where he's unlikely to win in the 2024 election. During his speeches, he painted bleak pictures of the cities hosting him.
In Aurora, Colorado, he described the area as a "war zone," raising concerns about Venezuelan gangs, although the city's mayor has said these claims are "grossly exaggerated." In California, Trump* called the state a "paradise lost," blaming Vice President Kamala Harris for what he described as its "decay." His comments followed similar disparaging remarks about Detroit made at a rally there.
According to Northeastern University political science professor Costas Panagopoulos, Trump’s visits to these liberal states may not be an effort to sway voters but to send a message to his broader base. "It’s no accident Trump is in these places. He's trying to create the image that he's willing to confront what he views as hostile territory to bring attention to key issues in his campaign," Panagopoulos told
"Being physically present in these areas gives the impression that he knows what he's talking about when he criticizes them," he added.
