GOP pollster Justin Wallin breaks down the close polls between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump in key battleground states

A new national poll suggests former President Trump holds a slight lead over Harris in the race to succeed President Biden. According to a Wall Street Journal survey released Wednesday, Trump garners 47% support among likely voters, with Harris at 45% in a race that also includes third-party and independent candidates. This marks a shift from the Journal's previous survey in late August, which showed Harris leading by two points.

Trump's current advantage is within the margin of error, meaning either candidate could be ahead. In a head-to-head matchup, the Journal poll, which surveyed 1,500 registered voters from Oct. 19-22, shows Trump leading by 3 points (49%-46%).

The survey reveals that public perception of Harris has worsened since August, with her favorability rating now eight points underwater and her approval as vice president at 42%-54%. In contrast, views of Trump have improved, with 52% of voters approving of his performance during his time in office.

The Wall Street Journal poll follows a Fox News national survey from mid-October, which also showed Trump with a two-point lead over Harris. Other recent national polls, including those from CBS News, Marist, and USA Today/Suffolk University, have indicated Harris with a slight edge, but most are within the margin of error.

Harris replaced President Biden as the Democratic nominee on July 21, leading to an initial surge in fundraising and polling. She held an advantage over Trump during the Democratic National Convention in August and following her debate with Trump in early September. However, polls in late September and October have shown Trump gaining ground.

In battleground states—key to determining the outcome of the 2024 election—the race remains tight, with most surveys showing results within the margin of error. A Fox News poll gave Harris a six-point lead over Trump among voters in these crucial states.

Despite the close polling, Harris holds a significant financial edge in the campaign. She raised $221.8 million in September, far outpacing Trump's $63 million. Harris's campaign has spent heavily on paid media, maintaining a large cash-on-hand advantage heading into the final stretch. By the end of September, Harris reported $187 million in her campaign coffers, compared to Trump's $119 million. These figures exclude funds raised by national party committees, affiliated organizations, and super PACs backing each candidate.
