In the Patriots' defeat, Jacoby Brissett suffers a shoulder injury.

Coach Jerod Mayo stated that starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett of the New England Patriots might have played longer if the goal had been to play him longer. Brissett hurt his throwing shoulder in the first quarter of the team's 20-10 preseason loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

"We'll see [Monday], but I spoke with him." The next day is usually a little bit more painful, Mayo added. "But he said he was good."

On the sixth offensive play, Brissett groaned as Washington's KJ Henry sacked him. Henry, a 6-foot-4, 255-pound running back, came in free after a blocking error, falling with his entire body weight on top of Brissett's right shoulder. Brissett stood up and clutched his front shoulder with his left hand, sweeping it across his chest.

Still in the game, he found receiver K.J. Osborn with a precise long pass that was dropped after he connected on a 6-yard pass the next play.

After that, Mayo reported that Brissett was taken out of the game as per the prearranged plan, allowing rookie Drake Maye to finish the second quarter.

Brissett finished the rest of the night on the sidelines, but Mayo said of him, "He would have been able to continue."

Maye, starting in place of Brissett, went 13-of-20 for 126 yards and one score, which was on his opening play. In addition, Maye ran for 17 yards on a crucial play that resulted in the team's only touchdown.

In the event that Brissett's injury becomes more serious, Mayo and his coaching staff will decide whether or not to hand the reins to Maye, the third overall pick in the draft. After the game on Sunday, Mayo refused to commit to that, stating he needed to watch the movie.

"I would like to sit here and say 100 percent, he is our second-best quarterback on our roster right now," Mayo stated.

The nearby offensive could make that prospect more difficult.

especially on the line, cast. Sunday saw eight penalties called against the Patriots' starting offensive line (without center David Andrews). In addition, there was a poor shotgun snap, another poorly executed center-quarterback interchange, and a blocking error on the play that resulted in a sack of Brissett. Three of the eight penalties were for improper alignment against Chukwuma Okorafor, the left tackle, and one against Mike Onwenu, the right tackle.

Before Tuesday's deadline to reduce the roster to 53 players, the Patriots had rookie Joe Milton III and third-year veteran Bailey Zappe on the quarterback depth chart in addition to Brissett and Maye.
